Selection of Stars of Independence from Elementary and Secondary Schools

      Jointly hosted by Communist Youth League Committee of Tianjin, Chinese Young Pioneers Working Committee of Tianjin, Jinwanbao Newspaper, Tianjin TLY Cultural Foundation, Children’s Palace of Tianjin and Tasly Group, selection of the Second Tasly Cup Stars of Independence Award begins at April 5th.
      The selection criteria are as follow: the candidates are elementary and secondary school students who have outstanding academic achievement, high morality, and enthusiasm in extracurricular activities they should be optimistic when facing difficulties, have courage to face challenging circumstances in study, life or other fields, they should have outstanding morale and strong will, and have great achievements within one’s district or school.
In order to ensure the candidates are paradigmatic, organizers would select children from four kinds of families: the most needy families, low-income families, working-class families, and wealthy families. Organizers will publish the candidates’ information on the websites of Communist Youth League Committee of Tianjin, Jinwanbao Newspaper and Children’s Palace of Tianjin. Citizens could vote through the Internet, text messages, and Jinwan public service hotline 96860 for ten Stars of Independence and twenty boys and girls of Independence. Winners will be awarded with certificate and Independent scholarship, and have the opportunity to participate in “Heart to Heart: the Third Anniversary of 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake”, and the opening ceremony of “China: a Big Family” national summer camp.

Young Ambassadors Returns to Tianjin

       Jointly hosted by the Communist Youth League Committee of Tianjin, Chinese Young Pioneers Working Committee of Tianjin, Jinwanbao Newspaper, Tianjin TLY Cultural Foundation, and presented by the Children’s Palace of Tianjin and Tasly Group, the activities“Young Ambassadors Giving Their Love to Sichuan Earthquake Stricken Area,” complete successfully. Young Ambassadors finished the four-day-love-tour and returned to Tianjin. They upload their photos and “diary of love” to Jinwan Website. The live interaction on Sohu and Sina microblog triggered enthusiastic response from netizens and gained a large number of fans.
      Staying together day and night for four days, children from Tianjin and Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, had become good friends. When parting, children who laughed along the way became somewhat quiet. Some insist on holding each other’s hands; some left their contact information to others and promised to keep in touch. Feng Ruochen, a student from Yaohua Middle School, a key school in Tianjin, told reporters that she felt people from different parts of the country are related to one another by blood. Seeing motherland rise from the disaster with strength, she found the direction of life.
      Jinwan Website opened a news column, “Tianjin Love Messengers to Wenchuan Three Years after the Quake,” to cover both in pictures and words the whole event. The messengers felt at once sad at the sight of the suffering of the people in Wenchuan and confident in the strong will of the people there to rebuild their homes. Young messengers from different schools in Tianjin had written down what they saw and experienced in their “diary of love,”, such as “We Will Meet Again” by Wu Haomin from No.57 Middle School, and “My Mother from Sichuan Taught Me How to Protect Myself in Earthquake" by Zhang Fang From Central Primary School. Those diaries are uploaded onto Jinwan Website, and received with warm interaction on Sohu and Sina microblog, triggering enthusiastic response among netizens and gaining a large amount of fans.
“Stars of Independence”Award Night Held Last Night

       Today is International Children’s Day. Jointly hosted by the Civilization Office of the Tianjin Communist Party Committee, Communist Youth League Committee of Tianjin, Chinese Young Pioneers Working Committee of Tianjin, Jinwanbao Newspaper, Tianjin TLY Cultural Foundation, and presented by the Children’s Palace of Tianjin and Tasly Group, the “Stars of Independence” Award Night and the Ceremony of the Children’s Day was held at Jinwan Plaza last night. The ten “Stars of Independence” received warmly by Zhang Gaoli, Secretary of Tianjin Municipal Committee, and Tianjin Mayor Huang Xingguo earlier yesterday, were present. Their stories moved all the students present.
      Among the 10 “Stars of Independence” some come from needy families, and some come from rural areas. Besides, it was the first time for most them to stand under the spotlight. Li Yun from Children's Village for orphans, and Liu Huanya from Dongli District said excitedly that Grandpa Zhang Gaoli praised their valuable spirit in the morning and in the afternoon grandpa Huang Xingguo listened to their speech, and they were greatly inspired. They felt they became more mature and realized their responsibility all of a sudden. They all said that they wanted to study hard, keep an optimistic attitude, and become industrious and useful citizens.
      The “Stars of Independence” Moved Tianjin
      The moving stories of the “Stars of Independence” are widely spread and get strong response in primary and middle schools in the city. Last night, many students and parents went to Jinwan Plaza to participate in the “Stars of Independence” Award Night, hoping to learn from the Stars.
      Becoming Independent by Learning from the “Stars of Independence”
      Though almost blind, Zhou Tianqing, has been doing outstandingly well in his academic performance. His story moved the third grade student Liu Yifei in Zhongying Primary School. Liu said she would learn from Zhou to study hard and prepare to be a designer in the future.
Gao Zhen, a student from Grade one in Kaijiangdao Primary School, told the reporter that the “Stars of Independence” served as good models for them. Now she get up earlier and help her mother do some simple housework.
      The “Stars of Independence” Inspired Parents
      The “Stars of Independence” not only became the role model of children, but also inspired their parents to reflect on their children’s educational method. A lot of parents told the reporter that the strong will of the “Stars of Independence” impressed them. They would improve their way of family education and enhance their children’s ability and determination to become a successful person.
      One of the parents, Ms. Mu, said that she used to provide her child with superior material comfort, and was reluctant to let her child suffer any setback, no matter how little it was. Since she read the report of the “Stars of Independence” from Jinwanbao Newspaper, she started to teach her child the skill and courage to live independently, and inculcate in her child a sense of self-reliance. She encouraged her child to take part in more social activities in order to better understand what the society was like.
      Another parent, Mr. Liu holds the viewed that activities like the election of the “Stars of Independence" were very meaningful. “Born in the 1970s, my generation always tells children the hardship we lived through in our age. But for the generation gap and changes in living environment, children can not understand. These Independent Stars are the child's peers; their stories can play a very good incentive to guide children develop correct worldview and sense of value,” he said.

Tianjin International Children's Day Gala Was Held Last Night

       In the evening of May 31st, Tianjin International Children's Day Gala was held at the Grand Theatre in Tianjin Bay. Young dancers and singers celebrated their festival with great performance

The “Stars of Independence” Young Pioneers and members from the art troupe of the Children’s Palace came together to present a wonderful performance as a gift to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the Party.
      More than 500 children from the art troupe of the Children’s Palace participated in the performance. Played by 50 preschool-age children with cheerful spirits,drum performance “Be Ready at Anytime” launched the activity.; Dance performance “Red, Red Chinese Knots” expressed the children’s good wishes to the party; Dance performance “Soccer Boy” and “Young Eagles” conveyed the children’s sense of self-reliance and optimistic spirit; the rhythm of the percussion music series,, “Red Star Song”, “ I Love Beijing Tiananmen ” , “Where Is Spring,” and, “We Are the Successors of Communism”” were inspiring; female solo“The Party Flag Is Brighter” enthusiastically eulogized the glorious era; campus fashion dance“Happiness Accompanies My Growth,” , Tujia character dance“Tujia Children Love the Party,” Mongolian character dance “Ballad on the Horseback,” and , Manzu character dance“Dancing, Dancing, Dancing” are were enriched by various ethnic customs and local colors, displaying the happy life of children from all ethnic groups; perform singing “Help the Schoolbag Loose Weight” was humorous and interesting ,expressing children’s wishes to reduce their academic burden. Group Artistic Gymnastics Infinity Energy, performed by 50 children, combining ball, ribbon and hoop action with dancing, won thunderous applauses with their graceful performance; group song “Our Motherland Is the Sun” with 120 children singing and dancing in it, raised the celebration to its peak.. Their beautiful singing and energetic dancing ignited the enthusiasm of the audience.

Tianjin Star of Independence: A 12-year-old Girl, Backbone of Her Family

       Her father died from traffic accidents. Facing her disabled mother and grandma in her late-sixties, Liu Huanya takes the burden of the family.——
       Summer vacation should be the most relaxed and happiest moment for most children. But for Liu Huanya, winner of the 2nd Tianjin “Stars of Independence” prize for elementary and secondary students, it is a busy season. Huanya is a pupil from Class One, Grade Five in Dongli Experimental elementary School. During summer vacation, she not only needs to help her aged grandma do farming work, but also needs to serve her disabled mother. The 12-year-old rural girl has taken the family burden on her tender shoulders, since her father died from a traffic accident.
       Little Dab Hand at Farming Work
Hot summer is the harvest season of corn. Recently, Liu Huanya was busy gathering the crops with her grandma. The slim and short girl’s skin was sunburned and covered with scratches by corn leaves. Her grandma told the reporter that though young, Huanya was a dab hand at farming work. They grew hot pepper, tomatoes, spinach, corn and other vegetables in their field, but now she was almost 70 and was in poor health, so Huanya was responsible for most of the work.
       Early Bird Cooked the Meal
       6 o’clock in the morning, most people are still in their dreams, but Liu Huanya has already got up to cook the meal. In her First Grade, Humana’s father died from a traffic accident and her disabled mother was always in poor health. The burden of life began to squeeze her tender shoulders and turned the 12-year-old girl into the backbone of her family.
Huanya’s teacher told the reporter that the very first thing she did after school was to buy foods and hurry home to cook. Once she cut her finger when slicing vegetable. She simply bound up the wound and kept on doing housework. She would massage her mother, who suffered from prolapse of lumbar intervertebral disc, besides washing dishes, cleaning the floor and putting things in order.
       Drawing on sand
At Huanya’s home, the reporter saw a painting: A pair of parents were playing happily with their little girl in a garden. The reporter could not help from asking who those people were in the picture. Liu Huanya said painting gave her an access to the world of imagination.
       Liu loves art. Though not being able to attend painting classes, she learned by herself diligently. In order to save money paint, she sketches on sand with sticks. Excellent Work Prize of Sunflower Painting Competition, the Second Prize of Taikang Cup Painting Competition, and the First Prize of Imagining the Future Painting Competition, seeing the weighty certificates of these prizes, the reporter's eyes could not help but get moistened.
Ten “Stars of Independence” from Elementary and Secondary Schools in Tianjin Went to Beijing and Joint with Children from All Parts of the Country

       China National Committee for the Wellbeing of the Youth and Tianjin TLY Cultural Foundation hosted “China, a Big Family: the 2nd Summer Camp (Beijing Stem Camp) of Nation-wide Care for Children of all Ethnicities and the 8th Summer Camp of Nation-wide Care for the Orphans Caused by AIDS” in the Great Hall of People on July 27th. In the morning, 10 “Stars of Independence” from elementary and secondary schools in Tianjin went to Beijing and joint with children from all parts of the country, bringing with them special characteristics belonging to the children of Tianjin.
The Second Independent Star Award Issued

       Jointly hosted by Communist Youth League Committee of Tianjin, Chinese Young Pioneers Working Committee of Tianjin, Jinwanbao Newspaper, Tianjin TLY Cultural Foundation, and presented by Children’s Palace of Tianjin, the second “Stars of Independence” Award Night was held last night and the Study Fund Release Ceremony was held last night. Tianjin TLY Cultural Foundation gave 800 RMB student grant to each winner.
       The 2nd Tianjin “Stars of Independence” Selection started from early April. It has selected 10 “Stars of Independence” and 20 “Boys and Girls of Independence” from primary and secondary school students who are good in their academic performance, optimistic in their attitude and brave in overcoming difficulties. Therefore, they are the models for young boys and girls in Tianjin. They acknowledged the care and love of the society and promised to take “Self-reliance” as their motto to face bravely the various challenges in the future.
